Description

Today, the digital industry uses 10% of the electricity produced in the world and emits nearly 4% of global CO2 emissions. Beyond the environmental cost, societal and geopolitical issues are even less known: the extraction of minerals necessary for our electronic devices finances armed conflicts and relies on child labor. These equipments are generally designed to be obsolete very quickly, their lifespan is increasingly limited and generates more than 50 million tons of electronic waste per year. At the software level, some applications are developed without any consideration for their ecological or societal footprint. Many of them collect personal data feeding actors who build their business model on it. Just like the electronic chips that make up the little bit of reality in our connected world, SDKs are the virtual, abstract, opaque counterpart that makes up today's software. How can we, as developers, play a role in countering this dark side of the digital world and move towards more virtuous, ethical and responsible solutions?

From the transistor to the octet, what happened to ethics?
