Pauline Déroulède, a former club tennis player, took up wheelchair tennis after an accident in 2018. While stationary on her scooter, she was hit by a car, resulting in the amputation of her leg, turning her life upside down. Pauline has always been motivated by the idea of excelling, succeeding and progressing. As a combative and resilient woman, she managed to rebuild herself and excel in her new discipline, wheelchair tennis, achieving excellent results. Her taste for competition intensified, and with great determination, she quickly moved up the rankings and joined the French team. With an unshakeable will, Pauline Déroulède has ambitious goals in several areas. On the sporting front, she is following a rigorous training programme in a bid to win a medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024 and break into the world's top 10. On the social front, she is campaigning for changes in the law to introduce a compulsory test of fitness to drive, a test that could have prevented her accident from happening in the first place. Drawing on her life experience, she explains how to transcend yourself after an ordeal, set yourself goals and achieve them.

In IT, resiliency is often interpreted in very narrow ways. The fixation is often on purely technical aspects. Whilst discussions around isolated failure planes, redundant provisoning, and self-healing systems can all be part and parcel of improving the resiliency of the systems we create, the focus on the purely technical means we are all too often ignoring critical aspects which are key to understand if we really want to deliver resiliency. In this talk, Sam Newman will explore two models to help show how many factors come into play when addressing resilience. He will interpret David Woods "Four Concepts For Resilience", putting them into the context of the software systems we build to give you some practical advice about the changes you can make in your own organisations. He will also introduce the concept of socitechnical systems, to show the essential interconnection between the social and technical sides of software delivery.
